5 Nights in Singapore

Me & my wife needed a break badly & decided to go to one of my favorite spots in the world, Singapore. I have been to Singapore around 5 times in the past but always as a business traveler seen some of its beauty already. Well this time, it was time to explore it all at Leisure. I truly believe in sharing what i learnt & experienced. I personally took help from many other travel blogs to plan my trip, that helped me save lot of time &  money upfront. Hope this blog helps someone in future.

Theme : We went around like locals & went to many local places not just the tourists attractions. We used MRT as many times as we could to experience the real Singapore travel. Ate at the Hawker zones.

Most attractions tickets bought on : Voyagin & Klook online. Always save between SGD 3 to 8 per tickets. + they give you SGD 5 off for your next attractions everytime you book a ticket.

Summary Itinerary :
Day 1: Singapore Zoo, Walk around Little India & Bugis market, Merlion Park
Day 2 : Brunch with old friends, China Town, Orchard Road, Arab Street & Clarke Quay in the night
Day 3 : Universal Studios, Marina Bay Sands Skypark & Casino
Day 4 : Sentosa Island attractions (Mount Faber Peak, Cable Car, Luge, Madame Tussaud, Siloso Beach, Wings of Time, Dinner with ex-colleagues)
Day 5: Shopping in Bugis Market, Gardens by the Bay
Day 6: Walk around CBD area & Lunch at Lau Pa Sat before heading to the airport

My personal take is these same items can be done in 4 nights instead of 5 nights. But we decided to have a very relaxing holiday with lots of time at hand.

We stayed at  Holiday Inn Express Clarke Quay. We decided to stay here due to the proximity of the hotel to Riverside & walking distance from Fort fanning MRT. Serves free breakfast, Jacuzzi, Swimming pool & wonderful staff. 24 hours limited food menu available and Bar open till 12 am that allows you to relax within the hotel property.

Day 1 : Singapore Zoo, Walk around Little India & Bugis market, Merlion Park

We were so excited to be in Singapore that we decided to not loose any time getting started with the trip. We landed at 7:30 am in the morning & headed straight to the hotel, dropped our bags & went to the Zoo. Getting to the Zoo is not the easiest of ride. You have to either take a taxi which may become expensive round trip, combination of train & bus ride that will eat up easily an hour wherever you stay in the city. We ended up riding a SGD6 per person one way shuttle from the hotel (Shared). The bus runs through multiple pick up location & halts at Holiday inn at 9:15 am & 10:15 am daily. Check with the front desk or Shuttle Service to the Zoo. Roughly 30-40 mins ride at the max. You can book a round trip with Saex at SGD10.

Time required at Zoo : 3 hours easily if not more. You should time it to catch hold of shows inside the zoo. Zoo has optional tram service inside that can be used for a quick tour instead of walking. It is more fun walking by the way.  Singapore Zoo is one of the best in the world. It is an actual forest area converted into the Zoo so it feels more authentic. They have zones for animals for around the world Africa, Australia, South east asia etc.

We did not do Night safari at the Zoo but that is worth going as well if you have time during your trip. The food options are mostly Non vegetarian so to my Vegetarian friends, be ready to drink some juice & bring fruits along with you.

Day 2: Brunch with old friends, China Town, Orchard Road, Arab Street & Clarke Quay in the night

Raffles City Food court for Brunch : It was a long pending catch up with our friends in Singapore. We went to Raffles city food court & there are 100s of options from Cafe type food to buffet type lunch. Weekends are always busy so be sure to be patient with wait time at your favorite spot.

Took MRT from City hall to China town (experiencing MRT) and walked around China town for 2 hours. China town is always busy specially over the weekend. Be ready to be pulled in by Massage therapists :) while you are walking around. You can use this time to do some shopping & bring authentic south east Asian artifacts, gifts for your loved ones back home. Most places have discounts on gifts but you should negotiate specially if you want to buy 3-4 items from a single shop. Alert : don't set high expectations on the items that you buy. They are not so much of high quality. Sit around in a local food joint there to grab some Chinese food if you like.  Visiting Sri Mariamman Temple is worth visiting. It is at the junction of Pagoda st & South Bridge road.

Orchard Road : Took the train from Chinatown to Orchard Road (Interchange from Dhoby Ghaut). Orchard road is a Mecca for shopping. You can shop either in high end stores like LV, Prada, Gucci or walk around shopping malls. Lucky Plaza is a budget shopping mall for gifts & souvenirs.
Alert : Be ready to be surrounded by 100s of people in Lucky Plaza. There are lots of massage parlors inside so they bug you while you walk around. But best place to shop & walk away. There are money exchanges inside that gives you better FX rates. You can spend around 1 - 2 hours depending on how much you want to walk around.

Clarke Quay : Clarke Quay is undoubtedly one of the hotspots for nightlife. It is by the riverside & options ranges from decent restaurant to a hippie bar joint. You can have food from almost all the nationality. We preferred to eat Thai food that night at 'Talay Thai'. Got a seat by the river with a view of Marina Bay Sands building with a light show on. Its little expensive if you want to Wine & Dine but totally worth it. There are steakhouses, Mexican food & Italian food as well in Clarke Quay. You can take a walk by the river in the direction of Marina Bay Sands building. Make sure to check out history printed on the wall while you walk under-bridge by the riverside. We walked all the way to Elgin Bridge by the Boat Quay and walked back to the hotel. Good 20 mins walk to the hotel after dinner. Look out for the Love lock as you cross Clarke Quay central mall. It is by the riverside as you take the stroll.

Day 3 : Universal Studios, Marina Bay Sands Skypark & Casino

There is a reason to go on Sentosa Islands on weekdays..... To avoid the weekend rush. I am not exaggerating but even on Monday in Universal studios we spent 40mins to an hour waiting on most of the attractions. I am talking reaching there at 10am when Universal Studios start. So make sure to reach there just before 10.
Time required : Almost whole day. Universal studios is mostly for Family with Kids but Me & my wife enjoyed it too.
Tips : Start with the Battlestar Gallactica (Roller coaster must attend). It will be an hour wait even in the morning but atleast you will not be as tired mid day. This will ensure you can skip other items along the way later on in the day if you are tired.
Hollywood walk of fame : I'd give it a 3 star as they didn't have the celebrity star etched on the Hollywood Ave that we wished would have been there.
Revenge of the Mummy ride in Ancient Egypt :  Its a must see & experience thrilling roller coaster inside. They will have you lock your bags & valuables in the locker outside. Free for first 45 mins and then charged in increments. We finished our ride with a 40 mins wait time and came back in 43 mins :) so don't worry. It has one of the best interior roller coaster with good experience of Ancient Egypt.
My personal recommendation is to not waste time at the 'Treasure Hunter'. Wait time of 40 mins with a less than 10 mins Vintage car ride that you really don't drive & no real treasure hunt :)
Shrek 4D adventure, Lights Camera action, Elmo TV live are Shows you can watch & enjoy even as adults.
Around 5:15p and 6:15p you'll see Hollywood characters venturing out so you can time your attractions accordingly. They come out on Hollywood ave.

There's a casino in Resorts world Sentosa but it is no comparison to the Marina Bay Sands casino.

Evening : Time your visit to Marina Bay Sands park around 6:30 pm so you can see the sunset view & view in the night within one visit. You need really 20-30 mins at the max on the top but we spent around 1.5 hours as the views were mesmerizing. The tickets are generally SGD23 but we got it from Voyagin for SGD19. Access Skypark from MBS tower 3. There is a Restaurant on the top that is a separate entry so another option is to go to the Restaurant directly on 57th Floor with a SGD10 cover charge that you can use it for your drinks. Its also on the top of the building but you will have limited view as you'll be seated on your seat and not a 360 view. There is a Infinity pool on the top but allowed only for the residents & people staying at MBS hotel.

MBS Casino : It is free entry if you carry your passport. No specific dress code but if you are wearing short pants, flip flops..you'll be more than likely turned away. Casino is linked to the MRT station in the building so going in and out of the Casino is very convenient.

Day 4 : Sentosa Island attractions (Mount Faber Peak, Cable Car, Luge, Madame Tussauds, Siloso Beach, Wings of Time, Dinner with ex-colleagues)

We got the tickets for different attractions separately on different websites unlike combo tickets offered on Sentosa website. It is cheaper on Sentosa website but they don't offer Mount Faber peak & cable car MF line that is worth watching. We grabbed a SGD24.5 round trip Mount Faber Line cable car tickets from Voyagin. Recommend to start your journey from Harbor front station to Mount Faber Peak.. spend time at their cafe & walk around the Peak. It will give you view of the city freeway while on the cable car along with the water view. Mount Faber has different views & a good walk for nature lover. Don't miss the 'Bell of Happiness'. You can alternatively drive up there if you don't want to use the cable car. Take the cable car back to the Sentosa Island and get off on Sentosa station & you can use the Luge down the tracks. Take the Dragon trail while on the Luge for fun track. You will take the Skyline back on the top. The cool part of the Luge tickets is that you can do it twice. We got the tickets from Voyagin. You can walk down to the Merlion Station through escalators. Being at the Merlion statue is free but you can take tickets to climb the Merlion that gives you guided tour about Singapore & about Merlion itself. We did not do that. There is an Indian restaurant behind KFC near the Merlion Statue if you need to grab some Indian food.

Siloso beach is accessible by Cable car & you can spend good 1-2 hour relaxing by the beach & do Bungy or Zip along the Cable line on to the beach. Both of them are thrilling part on the beach. Swimming is allowed in limited section of the beach. There are couple of bars you can grab a nice seat with a beer or coffee.

Madame Tussads Wax Museum : It is worth visiting. It is a guided visit & will take you around 1.5 hours or less. Initially they take you through Singapore history with real actors dressed back in time in 1800s and within 30 mins you are in late 1900s. It was good knowing Singapore history with real environment created inside with actors. They will give you a quick 5 mins boat ride inside.
Take a walk with Wax statues of worldwide celebrities, leaders, sportsperson etc.
End the tour with Marvel 4D experience with all your superheroes. Absolute must for adults & kids.

Time all your attractions such that you are by the Wings of Time Beach area for a 7:45p or 8:45p show. You can take premium tickets for SGD23 or regular tickets for SGD13 at the counter. We took it for SGD20 on Voyagin. Because we used Voyagin earlier they gave us SGD5 discount that we used. So effectively SGD35 Premium tickets for 2. Not a bad deal.
Note : People line up 1 hour to 45 mins in advance of the show to grab the best seats. If you are within 45 mins of the show be rest assured, you have missed the best seats. Good thing is you have 2 show options so you can still spend time elsewhere before going to the show in time for 8:45p.

Best way to get out of the island is the Cable car as the tickets are covered round trip unless you want to take the Taxi from the Beach station by the wings of time. Be prepared to pay premium for the Taxi. We took the Cable car back to the harbor front station & taxi back to the hotel.

Dinner time with some old friends at the Cook & Brew in Westin hotel in CBD area followed with extended time spent on Arab street.

Day 5: Shopping in Bugis Market, Gardens by the Bay

Really relaxing day having covered all but 1 attraction that we wanted in Singapore. We kept this day almost open incase we missed visiting any attractions. Spent time in Bugis Market area & Bencoolen just hanging out and shopping.

Gardens by the Bay :  We missed going Gardens by the bay at the right time despite having whole day for us. Call it a bad planning. Gardens by the bay needs a good 3 hours+ if you are interested in Nature. Going there around 5pm would have helped as we would have had sunlight. Neverthless evenings are beautiful too. Entry into the Gardens itself is free. You can walk from the Bayfront MRT straight into the Gardens by the Marina bay sands building. There are ponds you can sit around and enjoy some relaxing time. You can walk around the gardens that has Malay Gardens, Chinese Gardens, Indian Garden among others that gives a good knowledge on actual trees & plants from these areas. You enter into the Flower Dome that has flowers & plants across the globe neatly marked. You can spend 1 hour inside going around different sections & gain some insights.
Enter into the Cloud Forest the best part for me. It makes you feel you are really in the Cloud forest. The place where I learnt difference between Cloud Forest & Rain Forest. It has the tallest Man made Water fall inside. Both the Flower dome & Cloud forest have a separate tickets (SGD23 online).

Then the light show called Garden Raphsody near the Supergrove trees. You can pay SGD8 extra to climb top of the Supergrove trees on the skywalk. We got it at SGD7 along with the other tickets. It is a 15mins light show worth watching every evening. The light show is free for all.

There was multi day festival inside the Gardens so we grabbed delicious Turkish food inside. Sad that they didn't have Kunefe on the menu :) But okay I am off topic.

Day 6: Walk around CBD area & Lunch at Lau Pa Sat before heading to the airport

Basically Packing & heading off to the airport. I had been to Singapore in the past & got used to eating at Lau Pa Sat hawkers market (basically cheap & delicious food). It was in the CBD area so we went around lunch time. Be careful if you are going from 11:45 am onwards. There are 1000s of employees in the area so everyone comes there. Interesting concept of reserving your open tables in the Hawker zone. Keeping a Tissue paper, Business card in any open table to reserve. If you see that, it is taken. Very funny as you can technically put your business card on the table, go to any food stalls, grab the food & come back.  I like that zone as it has variety of food options specially Vegetarian. Every meal is below SGD10. We went there to experience the local way.

Walked around the Marina Link road, captured some beutiful pictures of MBS tower & headed to the hotel grabbed our bags & off to the airport. Airport is a good place to shop specially Duty free. Be sure to use GST Refunds counter for any items you bought from Singapore & still have not opened it. GST refund is really a thing. You can save 7% flat. If you buy at the airport, more than likely it is already off by 7% so you don't have to claim GST refunds.

Thats a wrap & Hope you like my first Blog. I intend to write many such blogs in future & try to recollect some old memories & write up blogs on my past trips worldwide. I will be posting many more pics of this trip on my Google photos soon.
